Six Tablescape Themes with White Dishes

Oh what a night!!  We had a fabulous time at our church's Christmas Ladies night on Friday.  We call it Sights and Sounds of Christmas.  My sister-in-law, Nancy did a great workshop on tablescape ideas using white plates.  She showed the ladies 6 different themes.   Please bare with us, if everything on the table isn't straight and all cutlery in the correct spot.  I was her "right hand" and we did this mini workshop in 15 minutes.  There were 3 groups of ladies that saw this workshop and we only had 5 minutes in between to basically dump everything from each place setting in a separate basket and start over again with the next group.  Phewf!!   I knew you would want to see her great ideas, so Nicole took some pictures! :)

Red & White

Photobucket

A simple red place mat sets off the white dishes so well.  The ladies were encouraged to think outside of the box with tree ornaments, and use them for more than hanging on a tree.  The little glass mitten is a tree ornament used as a table decoration, or take home favor for your guests.  A chocolate wrapped in red foil adds some more of that festive color.  A quick idea for a pretty place card is a simple gift tag.

Black & Silver

Photobucket

A black place mat is the perfect beginning to this square place setting.  I love these silver chargers.  Nancy shared two options for napkins.  A grey napkin tied with a black satin ribbon, and decorated with tree ornaments.  The black napkin has a simple silver napkin ring.  She found sticky strips of rhinestones at the Dollarama, and attached a few to the silver napkin ring, and some more to the front of the stemware base.  It really gives them some bling!!

Brown & Gold

Photobucket

Chocolate brown and gold are beautiful together.  Nancy tied the napkin and cutlery together with a gold piece of raffia.  More tree ornaments are found in this place setting with the gorgeous pine cones.  A chocolate treat for each guest is tucked in this pretty gold box (Dollarama).  A little bit of fresh cedar really adds a lot of holiday cheer to your place settings.

Frosty Blue

Photobucket

What a great tablescape theme for the holidays, or for a special dinner during the chilly winter months.  The place mat for this place setting is a plastic snowflake (Dollarama).  They are so pretty.  The stemware is also sitting on a small mirror snowflake.  She continued the blue theme through the charger, and round tree ball and also by standing a blue place card up against a clear candle holder.  The little present in the bowl is a tree ornament that is battery operated, and changes color.

Children's Gingerbread Table

Photobucket

Nancy has three sweet little grandsons.  I'm sure she was thinking about them as she pulled this children's place setting together.  The place mats are two pieces of scrapbooking paper.  They will be perfect for occupying the boys with the crayons you see at the head of the plate.  The crayons can be stored in the cute little gingerbread house box.  Note on the top right corner of the red paper that she has traced a gingerbread cookie cutter and then cut it all out except for the bottom.  She folded the paper up and it has become her place card!  The other option for a sweet place card is the candy cane easel she made by gluing three candy canes together and placing a cute little card in it with the child's name on it.  What could please the children at your table more than a holiday cracker, and gingerbread cookies.

Rustic Log Cabin

Photobucket

This is my favorite.  I just love the relaxed, cozy feel of this theme.  Nancy started this place setting by folding a warm scarf and placed it so the fringe hung down over the edge of the table!  The cutlery could also have been placed inside those sweet little mittens (another tree ornament).  The little black pot could be full of beans, homemade soup, chili...oh yum!  A mason jar/mug containing hot apple cider, and birch bark as a place card really adds to the rustic decor.  Pine cones, greenery and a plaid ribbon...she hit this one right out of the park!!!

Thank you Nancy, for the inspiration and very creative ideas you shared with us! We are ready to set our Christmas table now!! :)

Happy Halloween

I shared with you all last year, that the scary side of Halloween doesn't interest me at all.  I like cute, fun, and pretty!  So hop on my broom behind me and lets go for a ride around my Halloween tablescape!

Photobucket

I found the black plates this summer at a discount store...very cheap! I always seem to find a great deal on dishes at Mardens in Maine.

Photobucket

My place card holders are made from old door knobs.  See how I did it HERE.

Photobucket

This poor little witch was driving her broom a bit too fast!  But hey, if you are going to crash, that's a pretty "sweet" place to do it!  ;)

Photobucket

Don't you love my new spider pumpkin holder?  Gwyneth and I met for lunch at Masstown Market in September and they had three different sizes of these cuties.  There was a small one that would have fit the little white jack be little pumpkin in front as well!

The cute little battery operated mini lights are turned on here, but it's hard to tell.  They were so pretty later that night!

Wishing everyone a fun, safe Halloween!

Thanksgiving 2012

Not long ago I posted a picture on the Take Six Facebook page showing this table at the very beginning stage of preparation.  Today I'm happy to show you the finished product.  This tablescape seemed to happen almost without my assistance.  It just kind of came together with no effort.  It's so fun when that happens.

Shutters, Bumble Bees & 5 Tips

As in most parts of the country, we are having a warmer and dryer summer than usual.  The lawns are brown, and the gardens need water.  But nothing stops my yellow daisies.  They even bloomed a few weeks early for me this year!

My daughters found an awesome pair of old wooden shutters when they were driving around during a free-cycle weekend in our community last summer.  When I saw this table runner idea on Pinterest, I knew it would be perfect for a summertime tablescape.

Tip
Table runners do not always have to be fabric.  Think outside of the box.  Last fall I used a small wooden ladder in THIS tablescape.

Flowers and little floater candles in a jar carrier
give this centerpiece a simple, carefree feeling.

Tip
Gift tags from Michael's dollar bins make a sweet place card tucked into the fork.

I bought these bumble bee plates and napkin rings last year on an after season clearance.  I actually found them at two different stores, but they were both 50% off!!

Tip

These tiny vases were once candles that I used HERE on my Christmas Eve table.  When the candles were gone, I washed and saved the containers to use as a vase.

Tip
To elevate these dessert plates I sat them on top of a thrift store candle holder.

 The cutest little S & P's!

Tip
Don't you love the burlap place mats.  I made these several years ago by cutting up a roll of tree and shrub wrap from my favorite Home Hardware store.  I have used them over and over and over again!

I'm so glad you stopped by the back deck on this warm summer day.  I hope you try using one of these easy tips today on a table at your home.  Simple little accessories can make any meal time extra special!

PS.  Our Facebook Fans saw a "teaser pic" of this tablescape a few days ago.  If you are not currently following us via FB, come on over HERE and like our page!

I Bleed Red & White

I saw the title of this post on a "Canada Day" t-shirt this year.  I LOVE it!!  I love my country, and I love celebrating things.  So, long before the first of July I pull out the flags and the red and white.  Not everyone in my family is quite so patriotic.  But we still love each other!  ;)

O Canada

Our home and native land

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free.

From far and wide,

O Canada

We stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land, glorious and free,

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

'In the Garden' Tablescape

Since the vegetable garden is all in, and up, I have been concentrating on my annuals and perennials this week.  I enjoy annuals on our back deck area.  It feels like "decorating the room".  The process of weeding the perennial garden is still...well...a process.  But I stopped long enough yesterday to set a gardening tablescape beside the garden.

Photobucket

The purple lupins have just begun their performance.  There are many buds still to open, so I believe this will be their best season yet.

Photobucket

Burlap wrap is a natural runner for a garden themed table.

Gardening tools are ideal for a simple centerpiece. The brown decoration was made by my son when he was very small.  It is a fossil of fern leaves made in Plaster of Paris.  It says, "MOM from Bradley".  Such a treasure to me.  Get out those treasure and enjoy them.  Use them in your tablescapes and decorating.

Photobucket

A simple stack of three plates.  All from the thrift store.

Photobucket

I picked these salt and pepper shakers up at Bed, Bath and Beyond.  You have seen them before HERE and HERE.  I'm sure you will see them again. I just love them.  Everyone needs birds in their garden!

Photobucket

These sweet little napkin rings were a gift from my sister, Lisa.  The set of four watering cans are all different.

Photobucket

My chive plant is looking beautiful.  You can see it just beyond the lupins in the next picture.  I harvested and preserved some last fall for the winter.  See how!!

Think outside of the box (or vase) when you are looking for a vase for flowers.  Anything that can hold water, or is large enough to hold a glass of water, can be used to display your flowers.  Both this watering can and old kettle have a glass of water down inside them.  The kettle has a hole in the bottom!!   ;)

Mother's Day Tablescape

Photobucket

I have been wanting to use these dishes in a tablescape for a long time.  I tried at Easter, and just couldn't make it "work".  As I pulled them out, yet again, I was determined to "get it together".  They are such a pretty, dainty pattern.  The contrast between the cream plate and dark table shows them off beautifully.  The table runners I've seen through Pinterest, made out of doilies, have really caught my eye.  I love them, and thought they would compliment these old dishes perfectly.

Doily Runner:  The first step was gathering the doilies I wanted to use and laying them out on the table, fitting them together like puzzle pieces.  You can stitch the doilies together with a matching thread wherever they touch each other.  I chose to just lay mine out, without stitching them together.  I like to use them all over my home, and didn't want to permanently attach them.  I gathered several of these beautiful pieces at local thrift stores for under $1.

Photobucket

The blossoming branches are a wild tree that blooms each spring in Nova Scotia.  My mother told me that Grammie always called them June Plum.  However, this is May, so our spring has come early this year.  :)  I snipped several branches and put them in my pink depression glass pitcher.

Photobucket

Photobucket

These dishes were collected in the 1940's in packages of oatmeal.  I have three teacups and saucers that were my grandmothers.  The rest of this collection I have found in different antique stores over the years.

Photobucket

You have seen these little place card holders before.  I told you their story HERE last Easter.  It was my first tablescape here on Take Six.  No laughing, OK?  ;)

On the bottom of the plate it says, American Limoges ~ Rosalie ~ 22k gold.  I picked up six dinner plates and the platter at one antique store for $20.  It is not an expensive pattern at all.  But oh so pretty!

We are celebrating Mother's Day this year as we usually do.  We will gather with family, each one contributing to a wonderful meal.  What a blessing!

How will you celebrate Mother's Day?
